Ride the Habitat 500

This fourth annual 500-mile bike ride sponsored by Habitat for Humanity, raises funds for home construction. This year's cycling adventure, part of Habitat for Humanity's 20th Anniversary Celebration, will travel from Louisville, Kentucky, to Atlanta, Georgia, during the week of August 23-30, 1996. Riders have a unique opportunity to raise awareness and support for Habitat for Humanity's mission to eliminate poverty housing. All funds raised, less expenses, will go to house building.

What is Habitat for Humanity? Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization. It seeks to eliminate poverty housing from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity has built approximately 40,000 houses around the world, providing safe, decent, affordable shelter. There are affiliates in 1,200 cities and towns in North America and in 45 countries throughout the world.

What route will the ride take? This fully-supported ride will travel south from Louisville through Kentucky with stops in Hodgenville and Scottsville, then head for Tennessee, stopping in Nashville, Manchester and Chattanooga. Finally, the ride reaches Georgia, with a stop in Cartersville before finishing up in Atlanta.

What services are provided? Registration fees cover the cost of breakfast and supper each day, a ride T-shirt, snacks, camping facilities and showers. Additional ride services include transport of cyclists' gear, daily route maps, road markings, sag wagons, bike repairs and a ham radio support network. Lunches are the responsibility of cyclists. Bike supplies and massages are available at a nominal cost.

If you are interested in riding, recruiting riders, helping as volunteer staff, publicizing the ride or recruiting sponsors for Habitat 500, please call Habitat for Humanity International at 1-800-Habitat, extension 456, or Pro Events International at 612-920-1042.
