Louisville Bicycle Club Newsletter -- September-October 1996

From the President . . .

by Adrian Freund

By the time you read this newsletter, the days of Summer and the 1996 cycling season will be winding down. One of the busiest touring schedules in years has provided rides to meet the needs of almost every member. Many new riders have shown up during the course of the year and have become our new friends. The Touring Committee, Kevin Clay and all of the ride captains deserve your thanks for their hard work.

Now for our grand finale! The Old Kentucky Home Tour departs on September 14. It promises to be the best yet, with new attractions and a new one-day ride option. Of course, we would like to see you for the entire weekend while we “invade” Bardstown and enjoy the festivities at the high school. Also, be on the lookout for Elvis! There are rumors that he is planning a return appearance for our special weekend. Thanks to the entire OKHT Committee, Brenda Palmer and Gary Keenan for their hard work! My personal weather prognosticator is calling for an outstanding weekend.

The Executive Committee of the Louisville Bicycle Club has been busy with some of the more mundane aspects of our operation. One of the major accomplishments of the year is the determination of our tax status by the Internal Revenue Service. Yes, some of us are excited about these things! The Executive Committee filed the Club’s first tax return during 1995, and then sought tax exemption as a non-profit organization. After many letters and conversations with the IRS, we received exemption as a 501(c)(4) organization. This is the most favorable classification and great news for the LBC. Jim Tretter and Earl Jones deserve all the credit for filing the paperwork and spending many hours on the telephone with the IRS. For now, the tax man cometh no more!

Lastly, a new Executive Committee will be selected in November at the Annual Meeting. Paula Do has accepted an appointment as Chairperson of the Nominating Committee and will select four members to assist her. Although the Committee’s work will get underway before this newsletter arrives, please contact Paula if you are interested in serving the Club in any capacity. The Committee is expected to recommend nominees for President, Vice-President of Touring, Vice-President of Communications, Vice-President of Racing, and Secretary. Remember, the Club depends on volunteers for all of its activities.

Until the next issue, happy cycling!
