The Times, They Are a'Changin...

by Cheryl Brawner

Fall of 1996 has been a time of transformation for the team. Our leadership of recent past has departed, leaving the team to rebuild from scratch. And rebuild it has! At last count, the team has 30+ members and is growing on an almost daily basis. Former members of the team, some who have been gone for a while, are returning, and a new mountain bike squad is gaining strength.

At the recent Holiday Party at Barbara Berman's home, it became apparent that there would be no lack of enthusiasm for the upcoming season. Many new faces were in the crowd, eager to try racing. Just as many of the 1996 organization were also in attendance, sharing war stories with the fledglings. Plans for training rides were being discussed, as well as the upcoming Spring Training Series. Energy and new ideas were as abundant as the food! Many thanks to Barbara for allowing us to use her home for the party. She was the “hostess with the mostest!”

Racing Team Meeting – Jan. 13, 1997

There will be a Team Meeting at Bob Zeman's house on Monday, January 13, 1997 at 7:00 p.m. If you did not attend the last meeting, Bob's address is 2321 Woodford Place in the Highlands (call (502) 459-3208 for directions). Please plan on attending, as there are many issues that will be addressed. Sponsorship for 1997 will be announced at that time, and a “first draft” of the new jersey design and team logo will be unveiled.

Racing Team Training Rides

Training rides are now taking place on the weekends. For road rides, contact Mark Zaccone at 254- 7591. For mountain bike rides, contact Tim Hill at 968-7480.

Developmental road rides will begin in January. These will be in conjunction with the touring club rides. Please refer to the club ride schedule if you would like to sharpen your skills after a long winter's layoff, or if you are curious about racing. These rides are moderately paced (Zone 1-2 for you who own heart rate monitors, average speed 15-16 mph) and only take place if the roads are dry and it is above 40 degrees at ride time. For more information, contact Cheryl Brawner at (502) 459-9949.

Also, a weekend mountain bike ride (fun + training) in Tennessee is in the initial planning stages. For more information, please contact Tim Hill at (502) 968-7480.
