White Water Rafting... Just Do It!

by Marilee Martin

The Gauley River in Beckley, West Virginia, is one of the top ten commercially rafted rivers in the world. With 12 miles of exciting and continuous white water containing over 40 rapids with nine rapids being Class V or better, this makes for a trip you will talk about for years!

The Louisville Bicycle Club is planning a trip this fall! We will raft Saturday, September 27th, and it will cost $129 per person, and may be lowered depending on the groups size. Ace Whitewater Company has a large post to take care of all rafting and camping needs. They also have 26 miles of mountain bike trails! You can bring your own bike or rent one. Ace will provide river transportation, upper Gauley ride and lunch on the river. Previous rafting experience is recommended but not required. Breakfast and dinners will be offered at the outfitters post. Meal tickets can be purchased in advance at a discount. Camping is available with reservations or you can use one of the local motels.

This trip is very popular so early reservation are advised. A non-refundable $25 deposit is required at the time of reservation and must be paid in full by June 25th. I recommend leaving Louisville Friday and raft Saturday, use Saturday evening or Sunday morning for hiking or mountain biking. Also the meal tickets are a fair deal and very convenient.

The Gauley River is so spectacular it could become an annual trip for the club. If interested, call Marilee Martin at 423-0600.
