Wet ’n Wild

by Marilee Martin

The Gauley River in Beckley, West Virginia, is one of the world’s top ten commercially rafted rivers, with twelve miles of exciting and continuous whitewater, containing over 40 rapids with nine of them rated “Class 5.” This will be an awesome adventure, so do make plans to come. We will raft Saturday, September 26th, and the cost now is $139.00, which will come down to about $129.00 in a group-rate.

Ace Whitewater Company has a large post to take care of all rafting, biking and camping needs. They also have 26 miles of mountain biking trails, and you can rent a bike there if you don’t want to bring your own. Ace will provide lunch and transportation to the river, and previous rafting experience is desired but not required. Make reservations at the local motels if you don’t want to go camping.

This trip is very popular. I suggest making reservations in July, and payment in full is required. Beckley, West Virginia, is about a five-hour drive from Louisville. I recommend leaving Louisville Friday and rafting Saturday, using Saturday evening or Sunday morning for hiking or biking. The New River Gorge and Gauley River are so spectacular, you will never forget it. I have rafted this river a half dozen times and it doesn’t get any better than this!
