Ton-O-Tandemsby Ron McKim
The Louisville Bicycle Club & the Southern Indiana Wheelmen are having a joint Tandem Ride on Saturday, September 25th. The ride will start at 10:00 am, at the Memphis Travel Plaza, in Memphis, Indiana (take I-65 north to exit 16). There is a choice of 22 & 40-mile routes.
The idea for the ride is to weigh the entire group of cyclists with their tandems. This will be done on a truck-scale located at the Memphis Travel Plaza. A group picture will also be taken. The picture along with the total weight will be sent to Tandem & Family Cycling Magazine. Hopefully our picture will be published in their winter issue.
Several clubs around the U.S. are competing for the record weight. With all the tandems in the Louisville area, we should have a good chance of winning! A club in Eugene, Oregon, has been putting on a ride of this nature for four years. Last year, their total weight was 5,900 lb. (approximately 18 teams). If we have a good turnout, maybe this could be a yearly ride for our two clubs.
The routes will be flat to rolling with a grocery store at the midpoint. If you want to ride a little farther or a little less, routes will be marked. Late September should have great weather, so mark your calendars, and lets try to put Louisville on the map.
All single bikes are welcome to ride along, please bring your friends.
