Bike Handling Class

by AB Sandefur

Classes were held each Monday evening at St. Matthews Elementary during the months of May, June, July and August. A different subject was covered each night followed by an eight- to ten-mile training ride. The night of the last class in August, we celebrated with a fruit ride. The series of classes were a great success with 125 different new riders attending at one time or another. However, the success is not measured by attendance but by how much they learned, how much they learned to enjoy riding and socializing, and how many began riding the Club rides. New riders rode to Bardstown on the OKHT and at least four former students (Pat, Lewis, Donna and Pam) rode their first century on the Honest Abe in September.

Thanks to guest speakers Cheryl Brawner, and Glenn and Lisa Todd who added variety to the classes. Also thanks to all the assistant instructors who helped every night with individual instructions and then rode point or sweep on the training rides (with no mileage credit): Steve Sarson, Phil Patterson, John Samways, Rick Kratt, and David Wittry. Also a very special thanks to Steve Sarson who took over the class and did a great job while I was slightly incapacitated in May.
