The friendly folks at RAAM are looking for a few good cyclists to compete in this year’s 2,970-mile edition of the 22nd Race Across America, scheduled to hammer from San Diego to Atlantic City starting June 15.
It is possible to do the race solo, if you’re up to 22 hours and 350 miles a day for eight or more days. But there also will be two-, four- and eight-person relay teams to share the pain. Organizers say each member of a four-person team will need to do 100 miles each day, in about six hours.
The eight-person teams make up what is called the Corporate Team Division, and their members will have a relative cake-walk, doing 50 or 60 miles a day in three hours or so. But they don’t get to share the $40,000 in prize money to be divided among winners of the other three classes.
So, have you got your vacation ride planned? The solo start is Sunday, June 15, at 7 a.m., and the team start is the next day at 2 p.m. They’ll be looking for finishers at Kennedy Plaza on the Boardwalk on or before noon, June 27.
