Share The Road License Plate Success

by Alison Smith

Kentucky will be the ninth state in the nation to offer a “Share The Road” specialty license plate. Kentucky joins Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Ohio, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

If you pre-applied for your STR plate, you can pick your new plate up in mid-January. You do not have to wait until your birth month. Your plate will be sent to the county you specified on your application. If you paid via PayPal, I have assigned your county based on the town listed for your billing address. When you go to your county clerk’s office to pick up your plate, you will need to turn in your old license plate ONLY if it is a specialty plate (collegiate, horse council, nature, etc.) You do not need to return a standard issue plate (Smiley, Unbridled Spirit, or truck plate). The county clerk will have your name on file, so he/she will know you have pre-paid for your STR plate. You will owe a $3 county clerk fee per plate when picking up your initial plate.

Remember, you may make a donation to the Kentucky Bicycle and Bikeway Commission (KBBC) when picking up your initial plate and when renewing your STR plate.

When you renew in 2007, you will owe a total of $15 ($12 state processing fee plus $3 county clerk handling fee).

Thank you to everyone who helped make this a reality!
