“I Love a Parade”

by Kathy Schmitt

LBC participates in the Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade! Calling all members of the Louisville Bicycle Club to participate in the 14th Annual Frankfort Avenue Easter Parade scheduled for Saturday, April 15th. The parade starts at approximately 11:30 AM near Frankfort and Kennedy avenues (near the old Dietrich’s parking lot and St. Michael’s Church) and moves toward town ending at Haldeman Avenue.

The parade is sponsored by the Frankfort Avenue Business Association and draws several hundred children as spectators (mainly for candy and a peek at the Easter Bunny). This is an excellent opportunity to create awareness for the numbers of cyclists in our community, show pride in our club, promote cycling as a fun and enjoyable way to obtain healthy exercise, and to encourage helmet use. As well as giving out candy to the kids, we will also give away stickers that say, “Don’t be a Dumb Bunny — Wear a Helmet” or “Be Smart — Wear a Helmet.”

I am hopeful for good weather and a big turnout of club members (with or without kids and grandkids) on every type of bike: racing, commuting, touring, recumbent, tandem, tagalong, trailer, bikes with kid seats, etc. Bikes can be decorated with streamers, whistles, bells, and cyclists should wear your loudest and brightest Easter Egg spandex bike clothing, boas, beads, and bunny ears. If you have a bunny costume in your closet ... by all means, wear it! Bikes with baskets to hold candy and stickers would be a good idea. Just please show up and don’t forget to wear your helmet! I’d also like to figure out a way to haul some music on a bike or drive a pickup loaded with bikes and bike racks.

Please note: we will probably be doing more “walking” with our bikes than riding for safety reasons. I hope to have a club ride afterwards for those who want to get in some real miles (more details later).

Call me for more information. We can assemble at my house at 118 Hillcrest Avenue anytime after 9:30 AM. We’ll leave at 10:45 AM and walk over. I plan to have supplies for making posters, and some coffee (maybe donuts). Call me at 502-643-7428 or email me at for more information or ways you can help!
